Moultrie’s Wind Checker for Hunting

Ideal Winds Direction on the Moultrie App

Wind Direction & Hunting

Life got busier for my husband and me when we had our son in 2023. We both struggled with how we would adjust our routine with a newborn and get back to the woods. This season, having the tools at our fingertips to streamline our time was essential for my family and me.

IDEAL WIND WITH THE MOULTRIE MOBILE APP

The Moultrie App has been a game-changer for my family. It’s allowed us to work smarter and find a balance between work, family, and our shared passion for hunting. This season, our favorite app feature is Ideal Winds Directions. It’s been a game-changer.

With the Ideal Winds Direction, we are in the best position. You can set the ideal wind direction for each stand or blind, and the app provides real-time and forecasted wind conditions for up to seven days. Whether it's morning, midday, or evening, the feature gives instant feedback on current wind directions, helping you choose the best spots to avoid detection.

PRE-SEASON

This year, my husband and I had two bucks we were targeting on our Moultrie EDGE 2, an older 8-point and 6-point. We were excited to use the Hunt Planning features to keep the pressure low where we hunt so we could plan timing with childcare in advance.

We would sit around the dinner table every night, discussing the data of our Moultrie App. We noticed the 8-point and 6-point we had been targeting, showed up consistently every evening around 5:30 pm. After pulling up our Ideal Winds, we planned to sit that Saturday afternoon until dark.

HUNTING SEASON SUCCESS

We got to the stand around 2:30 pm and had a small spike show up around 4:00 pm. He fed for around 40 minutes, and then made his way off the field. It was about 15 minutes before dark we saw a young 5-point step out and go straight to our Moultrie feeder, followed by another small spike. With us knowing the deer in the area from our Moultrie cellular trail camera, we knew there was a chance the mature 8-point we were targeting could step out. My husband was so focused on the two smaller deer at the feeder that he overlooked the 8-point stepping out. He beelined into our shooting window and gave him a slight quartering away shot.

He took the shot. I watched as the arrow passed through and then took off into the woods. We immediately celebrated and called my dad to come help us track him. We gave the deer about an hour just to be safe and then walked back in to follow the blood trail. We hadn't walked 35 yards and saw him lying there. We all started jumping up and down and couldn't wait to get him out of the woods. None of this would have been possible without the help of our cell cams and the Moultrie App!

Why is Wind Direction Important to Deer Hunting?

Wind direction is critical in setting up your stands or blinds because deer rely heavily on their keen sense of smell to detect predators, including hunters. Setting up in the wrong wind direction can carry a hunter’s scent directly toward a deer, letting it know there is danger and causing it to flee the area. By understanding and aligning with the wind using the Ideal Wind Direction feature on the Moultrie App, hunters can position themselves downwind of their target, minimizing the chance of detection. This strategic use of wind direction not only improves the likelihood of a successful hunt but also helps maintain a more natural and undisturbed environment, ensuring deer continue to frequent the area.

Moultrie’s Ideal Wind Direction feature takes the guesswork out of planning your hunt, providing accurate wind forecasts up to seven days in advance. By helping you position your stand or blind strategically, it ensures a more successful and stealthy hunting experience. Happy hunting!

Deer Hunting in the Wind FAQs

Q: How much wind is too much for deer hunting?

A: Wind speeds above 20-25 mph can significantly reduce deer movement, making hunting less effective, as deer tend to hunker down in high winds to conserve energy and stay safe.

Q: How to hunt in the wind?

A: Position yourself downwind of the deer’s expected path to prevent your scent from reaching them. Use natural windbreaks to minimize your movement being detected and adapt your strategy to changing wind conditions

Q: Does wind affect turkey hunting?

A: Yes, wind affects turkey hunting by making turkeys less vocal and harder to locate. Strong winds may also push turkeys to more sheltered areas, requiring hunters to adjust their strategy.
